Automata

Documentary film — in development

Portrait of automatier François Junod

About the film

Automata is a feature-length documentary exploring the relationship between human creativity, mechanical intelligence and contemporary artificial intelligence.

The film follows the work of Swiss automaton-maker François Junod, whose handcrafted mechanical figures question our fascination with artificial life, precision and illusion.

Through encounters, observations and reflections, Automata confronts traditional craftsmanship with today’s generative technologies, raising broader questions about authorship, creativity and the future of human agency.

Automata is developed as a research-creation project.

The film does not merely document a craft; it investigates how artificial intelligence reshapes interpretation, authorship and human agency through the medium of cinema itself.

By confronting historical automata with contemporary generative systems, the project functions as an epistemic inquiry into automation, imagination and machinic vision.
